Movie Review: Sex and the City 2

Let me just start by saying I am not a Sex and the City fan. I’m not against the show; I just never got into it. My mom got into the reruns, and I bought her the entire series on DVD for her birthday or Christmas or something. It’s still in the box. Unopened. My first real exposure to SATC was when the first movie came out. I really enjoyed it and vowed I would watch the DVDs so I would understand what came before the movie. Um, haven’t quite gotten around to it yet. So… here we go with SATC 2.

SATC2 takes place two years after the first.  Carrie and Mr. Big are “between hot sex and a baby.” She wants to go out on the town, he wants to sit on the couch and watch TV. Miranda is having issues at the law firm. Charlotte is having a couple of nanny issues (you’ll get that when you see the movie). Samantha is, well… Samantha: chasing the ever elusive fountain of  youth. So when she meets Shiek Mahmoud at a premiere and he invites her to one week in Abu Dhabi (which has a pretty happenin’ nightlife), all expenses paid, the girls decide they’re all ready for a week of decadence.

Ah, Abu Dhabi. Even the flight over was decadent, the hotel suite was incredible, the karaoke bar was over the top. There was a lot of fallout in real life about the SATC girls throwing all that skirt-wearin’ sexuality around Abu Dhabi , so those scenes were actually filmed in Morocco. The ladies quickly notice and are concerned about the native women who are covered head to toe with the veils and robes. This opens the discussion for how men in America don’t really want women to have a voice.

Of course, Samantha manages to majorly offend the natives in ways that are supposed to be funny but mainly come across as Ugly American. And who does Carrie just happen to bump into on the other side of the world? Her ex, Aiden. Hmm, what to do, what to do…

SATC had its moments but it was not as funny as I had expected and hoped. As long as the movie was, it had no huge plot twists and, I was left wondering what the point was. I suppose it was about learning to appreciate what you have. I give this movie two Slurpees out of five.

The soundtrack includes the great True Colors by Cyndi Lauper and Empire State of Mind and a fun remake of Rapture by Alicia Keys. There’s also a campy version of Beyonce’s Single Ladies performed by Liza Minelli.

* Sex and the City 2 * Director: Michael Patrick King * Rated: R * Time: 146 minutes * Soundtrack * Trailer
